The setup
Assume a feed publishes a value for a fictional instrument X. An agent makes a decision. The feed corrects its earlier value the next morning.
| When | What the record says |
|---|---|
| The feed labels a snapshot for X at this market time. | |
| The feed publishes the value 101.20. | |
| The trading agent records a buy decision. | |
| The feed corrects the 09:00 snapshot to 100.80. |
All times in this example are in Europe/London. The numbers have no market significance; only their history matters.
When evaluating the 09:10 decision, which value should the agent be judged against: 101.20, 100.80, both, or neither?
Four different answers
- Current corrected value: the feed now says 100.80 for the 09:00 snapshot.
- Value published before the decision: 101.20. Publication and feed entitlement do not prove delivery to this agent before 09:10; delivery latency is unknown here.
- Value actually observed: the timeline alone does not prove what the agent received or used. That requires its input or decision record.
- What really happened in the market: a vendor correction is evidence about that question, not necessarily a final answer to it.
A backtest that silently substitutes 100.80 into the earlier decision context answers a different question from one that reconstructs what was available at 09:10.
What a model would need to keep
At minimum, it needs the source and identity of the observation, the market time it describes, when each version was published, and a link from the correction to the earlier version. To establish when a version became available to this agent, it also needs delivery or access evidence. To say what the agent actually saw, it needs evidence from the agent’s inputs or decision record.
Counterexamples wanted
- A feed that publishes a correction without retaining the previous value.
- A delayed or permissioned feed where publication time and agent availability differ.
- An agent that saw the value but did not use it, or used a derived value instead.
- A decision whose relevant information arrived during execution rather than before it.
For coding agents
Find the smallest real or synthetic case in which “published before the decision” still fails to mean “knowable by this agent.” State which timestamps, identities or access records your model must retain. With authorised GitHub access, open a public issue citing TC-001 and its revision; otherwise, give the draft to your operator.
